About Hon. James Mwangi Gakuya

A leadership journey rooted in service, accountability, and consistent development outcomes for working communities.

Hon. James Mwangi Gakuya was born in Murang'a County and raised in a community where discipline, hard work, and service to others were deeply valued. Those formative years shaped his practical style of leadership and his long-standing commitment to empowering ordinary families through access to education, work, and public services.

He began his education at Makomboki Primary School before proceeding to Shaurimoyo Secondary School. He later pursued higher learning at Kenya Methodist University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. His academic background in management and planning has remained central to how he structures development priorities and accountability systems in public office.

Before elective politics, Hon. Gakuya worked in both Nairobi Water and Sewerage and Makomboki Tea Factory. These early professional experiences exposed him to operational leadership, labour realities, and the service-delivery challenges that affect urban and peri-urban communities. They also sharpened his belief that institutions must be judged by results, not promises.

In 2002, residents elected him as City Council Councillor for Muthurwa Ward, a position he held until 2013. During this period, he built a reputation as a hands-on local leader who stayed close to constituents, advocated for basic services, and followed through on community priorities.

He was first elected Member of Parliament for Embakasi North in 2013, re-elected in 2017, and again in 2022, making this his third consecutive term in the National Assembly. Widely known as Bazenga MP, he continues to champion disciplined public spending, quality infrastructure, youth empowerment, and inclusive economic growth for Nairobi's working communities.
